HIGHLAND STATE OF MIND
PHOTOGRAPHER MELISSA FRASER MODEL ANNA YOUNG
In a world of endless multitasking, overstimulation, and burnout, everything comes to a stop here — in the wild Highlands, where rugged mountains meet the crashing sea. This is a place to re-connect, switch off, and play in rain, wind, or shine. Say goodbye to everyday stresses with a dose of untamed coastlines, misty peaks, and open skies. This is more than a place; it’s a state of mind. A refuge where the soul finds peace in wild landscapes and fresh sea air.
July’s cover feature takes us to the highlands of Scotland, as British fashion photographer Melissa Fraser creates a sense of peace and serenity amongst the landscape. Teaming up with model Anna Young the pair take us out of the day to day life of the busy, hectic town and into the calming countryside.
Interview date: 9/7/25
TYG: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Melissa. How did you start out as a photographer?
Melissa: I started doing photography when I was probs about 9 (borrowing the family camera for school trips). However, as an actual photographer in 2019, after graduating from Falmouth University. I managed to squeeze in London Fashion Week 2020 before the world shut down due to COVID-19. With COVID, I moved north and, with luck, landed a job with PrettyLittleThing and have been working in fashion ever since.
TYG: Who inspired you early on?
Melissa: Early on, it was photographers like Flóra Borsi & Annie Leibovitz. Nowadays it's the likes of Jamie Hawkesworth, Oliva Bossert and forever and always Tim Walker. Just love how his photos are like a dreamland.
TYG: How would you define your style?
Melissa: Anything outside! Get me in a random bit of countryside and my creativity comes alive. My photography blends fashion with the beauty of nature. And the feeling of freedom found in open, untouched spaces.
