CONFIDENCE

Taking a leap into the world of modelling is a real test of ones self confidence. Model Daisy Craig looks back at how she started her career and what helped prepare her for this.

Taking the first steps as a new model can be a daunting thing. How do I look? What is the correct pose? Do I look awkward? Often in the industry there isn’t any real training that prepares a model for the job at hand. You just have to go with the flow and pick it up as you go along.
New model on the scene Daisy Craig’s experience into the world of fashion photoshoots was no different.
Growing up near Liverpool, Daisy was familiar with the fashion shows she had seen but never really thought of modelling as a tangible thing.
This all changed though when one day she was scouted on the street by a photographer. Walking out of a hairdressers with a friend, the outfit Daisy was wearing (tartan pattern and ripped tights in her signature vintage style) caught the attention of photographer Howard Jackson, as he wanted to take a picture of her fashion.

Though these early shoots were new to her she knew quickly that this was something she enjoyed doing. Learning through a mixture of trial and error and working with the same photographer early on, her confidence was allowed to blossom and prepare her.
The familiarity this created, and the photographer's lack of judgement is something that Daisy describes helped boost her confidence. “It’s really interesting to see my development through his lens.”
Slowly gaining confidence and becoming, as she describes it, more “dynamic” her eyes were opened further into the modelling world as friends of her started Liverpool Fashion Scene. “People would meet up and make photoshoots and style. It was a place for creative fashion people to meet up and have a space. There wasn't really anything else like that in Liverpool.”

Being in fashion school also helped alongside this, as she became a default stand in model for friends (tall and thin). “I already had a big interest in fashion generally, I was working with all of these graduates and got to wear all of these cool clothes. That was so cool to me as I was getting to see things I didn't get to see most of the time. And then I thought “Oh, I could be making money doing this” haha.”
With people telling her she could do this as a career, it was only a matter of time.
Attending these spaces and setting up more shoots, Daisy’s confidence continued to grow and people started reaching out.
While still a student, Daisy got signed to her first agency. Now two years on she can look back and see her quick development over this short period of time. “When I do a job I think “Well you’re here now you might as well do your best”. You can't overthink it and think "Do I look bad?” because it shows on your face if you look scared.”
“It’s really interesting to see my development through his lens.”

Describing herself as a previously shy person, she now says this couldn't be further from the truth. “That shocks people, as I’m very out there now.”
Two years into her journey and doing the thing she loves, the modelling has been beneficial for Daisy and her confidence. And what advice does she have for those also looking to gain confidence? “A good way to practice is taking some pictures of yourself at home. You can always delete them and try again.”
